Rock Scaling
Rock scaling is the controlled removal of loose, unstable, or hazardous rock from cliffs, cut slopes, highwalls, and tunnel portals. We perform both manual rope-access scaling and mechanical scaling, matched to the size, geometry, and condition of the terrain.
Comprehensive Rock Scaling Programs
Scaling is often the first line of defense in rockfall mitigation. It removes loose blocks before they fall unexpectedly, reduces immediate danger to workers, the public, and infrastructure, improves slope geometry for long-term stability, allows accurate mapping of fractures and potential failure planes, and helps ensure rock bolts, dowels, mesh, and shotcrete bond to stable surfaces. Skipping scaling dramatically increases the risk of failure, even when engineered systems are installed correctly.
Common applications include highways and interstates beneath steep slopes, rail lines through mountainous terrain, tunnel portals and cuttings, mining highwalls and access roads, bridge abutments and retaining structures, and steep slopes awaiting mesh, barriers, or shotcrete.

Rock scaling is required when slopes show loose or fractured rock on the surface, visible cracks, wedges, or block separations, recent rockfall activity or talus accumulation, fire-damaged or heat-fractured rock, freeze-thaw instability in seasonal climates, or overhangs or bulging surfaces. Scaling is also essential before installing bolts, dowels, mesh, barriers, or shotcrete.

Draped Mesh Systems
Draped mesh is a passive rockfall control system that hangs steel mesh from a single row of crest anchors and uses gravity tension to capture detached blocks and channel them into a catchment area at the slope toe.
High-Energy Rockfall Barriers
High-energy rockfall barriers are flexible ring-net catch systems rated above 3,000 kJ for sites where large blocks, tall fall heights, or long-runout slopes drive impact energies beyond the capacity of standard barriers. These kits use heavier posts, longer brake-element strokes, and engineered foundations to dissipate impacts up to 10,000 kJ.
Pinned Mesh Systems
Pinned mesh is the active, source-control configuration of a slope mesh system. Steel wire mesh is laid against the rock or soil face and locked at every nail or bolt intersection on a 6 to 13 ft grid, restraining loose material at the source rather than catching it after release into a toe catchment.
Rock Bolting
Rock bolting stabilizes fractured, jointed, or unstable rock masses by anchoring steel bars deep into competent rock. By tying loose blocks back to stable substrate, rock bolts improve the overall strength and cohesion of slopes, cuts, tunnels, and vertical faces.
Rock Dowels
Rock dowels are passive ground-reinforcement elements installed in fractured or jointed rock to provide shear resistance across discontinuities. The bar is fully grouted along its entire length and develops tension only as the rock attempts to deform.
Shotcrete (Dry Mix)
Dry-mix shotcrete is the operator-controlled placement process where dry cement and aggregate are conveyed by compressed air to the nozzle, where the nozzleman meters water in at placement. Portable equipment, real-time water control, and bag-fed supply make dry-mix the right tool for repair, remote-site, intermittent, and overhead-dominant work where wet-mix pump-and-pour logistics do not pay back.
