Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls hold back earth, create usable space, and protect infrastructure, whether the job is stabilizing a failing slope, supporting a new building excavation, or maximizing developable land. As design-build retaining wall contractors, we handle soil nail walls, MSE walls, soldier pile walls, and gravity walls engineered for 75-100 year service life.

Complete Retaining Wall Services

The right retaining wall depends on the height, soil conditions, loading, drainage, aesthetics, and budget. Our engineering team evaluates these factors and designs the most cost-effective wall system for your specific situation.

Soil nail walls are our most common retaining wall system for cuts. As excavation proceeds, we install drilled steel bars (nails) into the retained soil and apply shotcrete facing. Soil nail walls are typically 25-50% less expensive than cantilever concrete walls and construct faster because they're built top-down as you excavate. We've built over 10 miles of soil nail walls across the Western U.S.

MSE walls (mechanically stabilized earth) use layers of reinforcement within compacted fill to create a stable earth structure. MSE walls are ideal for fill slopes, highway embankments, and bridge abutments. The facing can be concrete panels, modular blocks, or wire mesh with vegetation.

Soldier pile walls consist of steel beams with lagging installed between them. For taller walls, we add tieback anchors drilled into stable ground behind the wall. Soldier pile walls work well in urban areas where property lines are tight.

Gabion walls use wire baskets filled with rock to create permeable gravity walls. Gabions are economical, drain well, and blend naturally into landscapes.

For walls that need to look like natural rock, we apply sculpted shotcrete finishes that replicate stone, timber, or other textures.

Every retaining wall we build includes proper drainage. Water behind a wall is the leading cause of failure. We install drainage aggregate, geocomposite drains, and weep holes to ensure hydrostatic pressure never builds to dangerous levels.

How We Do It

Proven methods and specialized techniques that deliver reliable, long-lasting results.

Sculpted Shotcrete Finishes

Sculpted Shotcrete Finishes

Sculpted shotcrete is structural shotcrete carved in the plastic state to replicate natural rock, dry-stacked stone, or custom architectural textures, then stained with iron oxide pigments and sealed for UV-stable, weather-resistant aesthetics. The system pairs full ACI 506 structural capacity with engineered finish work for highway slope facings, retaining walls, theme park rockwork, and architectural civil features.

Gabion Baskets

Gabion baskets are rock-filled wire mesh containers that act as flexible gravity walls, channel armor, and slope buttresses on infrastructure projects. They are manufactured to ASTM A975 (double-twist hexagonal mesh) or ASTM A974 (welded wire fabric) and used to retain earth, armor streambanks, and protect bridge foundations against scour.

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls

MSE walls are reinforced soil retaining structures built using engineered backfill and steel or geosynthetic reinforcement layers. Faced with precast panels, welded wire baskets, or vegetated facings, MSE walls provide cost-effective, flexible earth retention for infrastructure and commercial projects.

Tieback Anchors

Tieback anchors are post-tensioned ground anchors that drill through a wall facing into competent soil or rock, develop bond along a deep fixed length, and are stressed to lock in 100 to 600 plus kips of holding load. They provide the active lateral restraint behind soldier pile walls, secant pile walls, foundation tie-ins, and dam abutments where passive systems would not develop adequate capacity.

Questions

Retaining Walls FAQ

Retaining wall costs depend on wall type, height, length, site access, and finish requirements. Soil nail walls typically cost $30-80 per square foot of wall face. MSE walls range from $25-60 per square foot. Anchored soldier pile walls run $50-100+ per square foot. We provide detailed estimates after evaluating your site conditions and requirements.
Most jurisdictions require engineered designs for walls over 4 feet high or walls that support structures, driveways, or slopes. Even when not required, engineering ensures the wall is designed for actual soil conditions and loads. Our licensed engineers design walls and stamp drawings for permitting. Engineering is included in our design-build services.
The 'best' wall depends on your situation. Soil nail walls are excellent for cut slopes and excavation support; they're economical and build quickly. MSE walls suit fill applications and highway work. Soldier pile walls work well in urban areas with tight property lines. Gabion walls provide drainage and blend with natural landscapes. We evaluate your site and recommend the most appropriate system.
We regularly build walls up to 75 feet tall. Very high walls require multiple levels of anchors or tiebacks to resist lateral earth pressure. For extremely tall applications, we sometimes use stepped walls or combine wall types. Our engineering team analyzes stability and designs systems for any height requirement.
Properly designed and constructed retaining walls last 75-100 years. Key factors include adequate drainage (the leading cause of failure is water buildup), appropriate design for soil conditions, quality materials with corrosion protection, and proper compaction of backfill. We design for long-term performance, not just passing inspection.
Yes. Depending on the failure mode, we can stabilize failing walls with tieback anchors, soil nails, or drainage improvements. Sometimes we install micropiles behind the wall to support it. In severe cases, we remove and replace the failed wall. Our assessment determines the most cost-effective repair approach.
Water behind a retaining wall dramatically increases lateral pressure, sometimes doubling or tripling the load the wall must resist. Saturated soil is also heavier and more likely to slide. Every wall we build includes drainage: gravel backfill, geocomposite drains, and weep holes to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup. Proper drainage is non-negotiable.
Absolutely. Beyond the structural function, retaining walls can enhance property appearance. Options include colored shotcrete, form liner textures, sculpted shotcrete that mimics natural stone, vegetated MSE wall facing, natural stone veneer, and decorative block systems.
Construction time depends on wall size, type, and site conditions. A typical residential soil nail wall (50-100 linear feet, 10-15 feet tall) installs in 2-4 weeks. Larger commercial or highway walls may take 1-3 months. MSE walls built with fills proceed as the earthwork progresses. We provide schedule estimates during the proposal process.
Yes. Our engineering team prepares design drawings, calculations, and permit applications. We coordinate with local building departments and respond to plan check comments. Permitting is included in our design-build services, you don't need to hire a separate engineer.

"We engaged Rock Supremacy for a very challenging cliffside project that involved the stabilization and reinforcement of a retaining wall which ultimately required a total of ten drilled horizontal rock anchors, multiple vertical stabilization pilings and encapsulation with concrete structural reinforcement. Even though my residential project, as large as it was to me, was of a much smaller scale than the company often deals with, it approached the task with all of the consideration and professionalism I could hope for. Notably, they were not hesitant to take on a challenging terrain even with its limited access. From the outset, Corey Muir was very engaged in the project and with finding workable solutions. He was eager to explore alternative options for accomplishing the goals and worked diligently with my engineering consultants to tweak the design for a practical, affordable solution. Throughout the planning process, he maintained excellent communications with myself and our structural engineers. Corey was careful to make sure, prior to our final agreement, that all details were fully understood. The company began the project exactly when anticipated. The on-site crew, David, Nate and Jules proved to be the "A" team. They are very skilled and professional. I found them considerate, easy to interact with, and flexible with regard to change possibilities. The team showed careful concern for my property and all possible avoidance of collateral damage while completing a job that involved some very heavy equipment. When the concrete supplier was unduly delayed, they took it in stride and made the best of the situation. The job was actually finished a little ahead of schedule. Definitely a five star rating for this group, I would be happy to further discuss my experience with anyone contemplating the use of Rock Supremacy's services."
