The right retaining wall depends on the height, soil conditions, loading, drainage, aesthetics, and budget. Our engineering team evaluates these factors and designs the most cost-effective wall system for your specific situation.
Soil nail walls are our most common retaining wall system for cuts. As excavation proceeds, we install drilled steel bars (nails) into the retained soil and apply shotcrete facing. Soil nail walls are typically 25-50% less expensive than cantilever concrete walls and construct faster because they're built top-down as you excavate. We've built over 10 miles of soil nail walls across the Western U.S.
MSE walls (mechanically stabilized earth) use layers of reinforcement within compacted fill to create a stable earth structure. MSE walls are ideal for fill slopes, highway embankments, and bridge abutments. The facing can be concrete panels, modular blocks, or wire mesh with vegetation.
Soldier pile walls consist of steel beams with lagging installed between them. For taller walls, we add tieback anchors drilled into stable ground behind the wall. Soldier pile walls work well in urban areas where property lines are tight.
Gabion walls use wire baskets filled with rock to create permeable gravity walls. Gabions are economical, drain well, and blend naturally into landscapes.
For walls that need to look like natural rock, we apply sculpted shotcrete finishes that replicate stone, timber, or other textures.
Every retaining wall we build includes proper drainage. Water behind a wall is the leading cause of failure. We install drainage aggregate, geocomposite drains, and weep holes to ensure hydrostatic pressure never builds to dangerous levels.

Sculpted Shotcrete Finishes
Sculpted shotcrete is structural shotcrete carved in the plastic state to replicate natural rock, dry-stacked stone, or custom architectural textures, then stained with iron oxide pigments and sealed for UV-stable, weather-resistant aesthetics. The system pairs full ACI 506 structural capacity with engineered finish work for highway slope facings, retaining walls, theme park rockwork, and architectural civil features.
Gabion Baskets
Gabion baskets are rock-filled wire mesh containers that act as flexible gravity walls, channel armor, and slope buttresses on infrastructure projects. They are manufactured to ASTM A975 (double-twist hexagonal mesh) or ASTM A974 (welded wire fabric) and used to retain earth, armor streambanks, and protect bridge foundations against scour.
Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls
MSE walls are reinforced soil retaining structures built using engineered backfill and steel or geosynthetic reinforcement layers. Faced with precast panels, welded wire baskets, or vegetated facings, MSE walls provide cost-effective, flexible earth retention for infrastructure and commercial projects.

Soldier Pile Walls
Soldier pile walls are proven earth retention systems for stabilizing deep excavations and steep slopes. Steel beams installed at intervals with lagging placed between them provide flexible, economical support that adapts to site constraints.
Structural Shotcrete
Structural shotcrete is pneumatically applied concrete engineered to carry computed structural loads, used for soil nail wall facings, tunnel primary and final linings, dam and spillway rehabilitation, and permanent retaining walls. ACI 506 family specifications govern design, placement, and acceptance testing.
Tieback Anchors
Tieback anchors are post-tensioned ground anchors that drill through a wall facing into competent soil or rock, develop bond along a deep fixed length, and are stressed to lock in 100 to 600 plus kips of holding load. They provide the active lateral restraint behind soldier pile walls, secant pile walls, foundation tie-ins, and dam abutments where passive systems would not develop adequate capacity.
