The Problem
The 96-year-old Moffat Tunnel portal exhibited significant deterioration from freeze-thaw cycles and water infiltration. Spalling concrete and loose rock threatened train operations. All work had to be completed during brief windows between freight traffic.
Our Approach
Our crews worked in 4-hour windows between trains, installing systematic rock bolts to secure loose blocks and applying fiber-reinforced shotcrete to restore the portal arch. A new drainage system was installed behind the liner to prevent future water damage.
The Outcome
The portal was fully rehabilitated without any unplanned service interruptions. The new drainage system reduced water infiltration by 90%, extending the expected service life by 50+ years.
