Shoring & Excavation Support

Shoring & Excavation Support

Safe excavation requires proper shoring. Whether you're digging a basement next to an existing building, installing utilities in unstable ground, or supporting a deep foundation excavation, Rock Supremacy designs and installs shoring systems that protect workers, adjacent structures, and your project timeline. As experienced shoring contractors, we provide temporary shoring for construction phases and permanent earth retention systems that become part of the finished structure. Our design-build capability means one team handles engineering, installation, and removal—reducing coordination headaches and keeping your project on schedule.

Complete Shoring & Earth Retention Services

Shoring protects your excavation, your workers, and neighboring properties. The right shoring system depends on excavation depth, soil conditions, groundwater, adjacent structures, and whether the retention needs to be temporary or permanent.

Soldier pile walls are our most common shoring system for urban excavations. Steel H-piles are driven or drilled at regular spacing, then wood or concrete lagging is installed between them as excavation proceeds. For deeper excavations, we add tieback anchors to resist lateral earth pressure.

Soil nail walls provide an economical alternative that becomes a permanent structure. As excavation proceeds, we drill and grout reinforcing bars into the retained soil, then apply shotcrete facing. Soil nailing is typically 25-50% less expensive than soldier pile walls.

Sheet pile walls work well for waterfront construction and excavations below the water table. Interlocking steel sheets create a continuous barrier that resists both soil and water pressure.

For excavations adjacent to sensitive structures, we provide micropile underpinning to support existing foundations before excavation begins. Real-time monitoring tracks any movement during construction.

Temporary shoring is removed after construction is complete. Permanent earth retention systems—including soil nail walls, anchored walls, and MSE walls—become part of the finished structure with design lives of 75-100 years.

Questions

Shoring & Excavation Support FAQ

The right shoring system depends on excavation depth, soil conditions, groundwater, adjacent structures, and project schedule. Soldier pile walls work well for most urban excavations. Soil nailing is economical when the wall can become permanent. Sheet piles suit waterfront or high-groundwater conditions. We evaluate your site and recommend the most cost-effective system for your specific conditions.
We regularly install shoring for excavations up to 75 feet deep. Deeper excavations require multiple levels of tiebacks or internal bracing. Our engineering team designs shoring systems for any depth, analyzing soil conditions and adjacent structure requirements to ensure safe, efficient construction.
Yes. We specialize in excavation support adjacent to occupied buildings. Our approach includes pre-construction surveys, foundation underpinning where needed, vibration monitoring, and real-time movement tracking. We coordinate closely with building owners and adjust our methods to minimize impacts.
Temporary shoring is removed after construction—basement walls are poured against it, then the shoring is extracted. Permanent shoring becomes part of the finished structure. Soil nail walls with architectural shotcrete facing are a common permanent system. Permanent shoring often costs less overall because there's no removal and the wall serves as the final structure.
Installation time depends on wall length, depth, and system type. A typical soldier pile wall for a single basement installs in 1-2 weeks. Larger excavations with multiple tieback levels may take several weeks. We coordinate with your construction schedule to ensure shoring is ready when you need to dig.
Yes. When excavations fail or adjacent structures are threatened, we mobilize emergency shoring crews within 48 hours. Our emergency services include temporary bracing, emergency soldier piles, and rapid soil nailing to stabilize dangerous situations before they worsen.
We provide integrated dewatering with our shoring systems. Options include wellpoints for shallow excavations, deep wells for significant groundwater, sump pumps for minor seepage, and sheet pile cutoff walls to block water flow. We design dewatering systems based on hydrogeological conditions to keep your excavation dry and stable.
We install and monitor inclinometers to track wall movement, survey points on adjacent structures, piezometers to track groundwater levels, and strain gauges on tiebacks and braces. Real-time monitoring allows us to respond quickly if conditions change during excavation.

What Our Clients Say

We take pride in building lasting relationships with our clients through exceptional service and results.

"It amazes me how quick these guys adapt to challenging and seemingly overwhelming construction situations in the best, and most creative approach. Very smart, dedicated, hardworking group of brave workers in hazardous work sites. Not the type of work just anyone can do! Keep up the good work!"

"When it comes to heavy foundation anchoring and stabilization projects, these guys are superb. Although the majority of the company's jobs involve heavy civil work, my project required their skills and specialized equipment for a challenging residential cliffside application. After careful review and critique of our plans, as well as assuring that expectations were fully understood, the work began on time and was completed ahead of schedule with minimal trauma along the way. In all, the job required the installation of ten horizontal deep rock anchors, several vertical piles, and shotcrete encapsulation. I highly recommend Rock Supremacy's services and would definitely use them again."

Residential Slope Stabilization
"We engaged Rock Supremacy for a very challenging cliffside project that involved the stabilization and reinforcement of a retaining wall which ultimately required a total of ten drilled horizontal rock anchors, multiple vertical stabilization pilings and encapsulation with concrete structural reinforcement. Even though my residential project, as large as it was to me, was of a much smaller scale than the company often deals with, it approached the task with all of the consideration and professionalism I could hope for. Notably, they were not hesitant to take on a challenging terrain even with its limited access. From the outset, Corey Muir was very engaged in the project and with finding workable solutions. He was eager to explore alternative options for accomplishing the goals and worked diligently with my engineering consultants to tweak the design for a practical, affordable solution. Throughout the planning process, he maintained excellent communications with myself and our structural engineers. Corey was careful to make sure, prior to our final agreement, that all details were fully understood. The company began the project exactly when anticipated. The on-site crew, David, Nate and Jules proved to be the "A" team. They are very skilled and professional. I found them considerate, easy to interact with, and flexible with regard to change possibilities. The team showed careful concern for my property and all possible avoidance of collateral damage while completing a job that involved some very heavy equipment. When the concrete supplier was unduly delayed, they took it in stride and made the best of the situation. The job was actually finished a little ahead of schedule. Definitely a five star rating for this group, I would be happy to further discuss my experience with anyone contemplating the use of Rock Supremacy's services."
