Mesh & Barrier Systems

Mesh & Barrier Systems

Mesh and barrier systems are essential components of rockfall mitigation and slope stabilization. We design and install systems that contain loose material, control rockfall trajectories, and intercept high-energy impacts across highways, rail lines, mining operations, and industrial facilities.

Complete Rockfall Protection Systems

Rockfall is unpredictable. Controlling it requires systems capable of handling variable block sizes and energies, withstanding weather, freeze-thaw cycles, and long-term corrosion, integrating with structural stabilization (bolts, dowels, anchors), and operating reliably in steep and remote terrain. Mesh stabilizes the slope surface; barriers protect what lies below. Combined, they create comprehensive rockfall defense.

Common applications include highway and railway protection, mine haul roads and pit walls, industrial facilities in mountainous regions, post-fire slopes exposed to rockfall or debris flow, urban development adjacent to unstable rock, and tunnel portals and cut slopes.

Choose Mesh & Barrier Systems when slopes exhibit loose or blocky rock, freeze-thaw cycling, repeated rockfall events, weathered or decomposed rock faces, steep slopes above roads, rails, or structures, or high-energy rockfall potential due to elevation or geometry.

Rock Supremacy delivers full-service installation for all protective systems: rope-access installation on vertical and overhanging slopes, helicopter-supported transport for remote sites, custom anchoring and drilling for difficult geology, energy-dissipation device installation on attenuators, fully engineered barrier foundations (micropiles, concrete pads, anchors), and integration with bolts, dowels, and shotcrete systems.

How We Do It

Proven methods and specialized techniques that deliver reliable, long-lasting results.

Draped Mesh Systems

Draped Mesh Systems

Draped mesh is a passive rockfall control system that hangs steel mesh from a single row of crest anchors and uses gravity tension to capture detached blocks and channel them into a catchment area at the slope toe.

Gabion Baskets
Gabion Baskets icon

Gabion Baskets

Gabion baskets are rock-filled wire mesh containers that act as flexible gravity walls, channel armor, and slope buttresses on infrastructure projects. They are manufactured to ASTM A975 (double-twist hexagonal mesh) or ASTM A974 (welded wire fabric) and used to retain earth, armor streambanks, and protect bridge foundations against scour.

High-Energy Rockfall Barriers

High-Energy Rockfall Barriers

High-energy rockfall barriers are flexible ring-net catch systems rated above 3,000 kJ for sites where large blocks, tall fall heights, or long-runout slopes drive impact energies beyond the capacity of standard barriers. These kits use heavier posts, longer brake-element strokes, and engineered foundations to dissipate impacts up to 10,000 kJ.

Pinned Mesh Systems

Pinned Mesh Systems

Pinned mesh is the active, source-control configuration of a slope mesh system. Steel wire mesh is laid against the rock or soil face and locked at every nail or bolt intersection on a 6 to 13 ft grid, restraining loose material at the source rather than catching it after release into a toe catchment.

TECCO Mesh System

TECCO is Geobrugg's high-tensile diamond steel wire mesh for active slope stabilization. The 1,770 N/mm² wire and pressed spike plates transfer nail load into the mesh body, actively restraining loose rock and weathered material in place rather than catching it after release.

Wire Rope Netting

Wire rope netting is a high-capacity cable-net rockfall system built from interlocking 8 to 12 mm spiral-strand steel wire ropes per ASTM A1023, used for multi-ton boulder containment on slopes where the design block exceeds the working range of woven steel mesh.

Questions

Mesh & Barrier Systems FAQ

Draped mesh hangs freely from anchors at the top and guides falling rocks to a catchment area. Pinned mesh is secured to the slope face with rock bolts to prevent rocks from detaching in the first place. The choice depends on hazard type and site conditions.
Modern ring-net barriers are rated from 500 kJ to over 5000 kJ. To put that in perspective, a 2-ton boulder falling 100 feet generates about 1200 kJ. We size barriers based on site-specific rockfall analysis.
High-tensile steel mesh systems with galvanized or Galfan coating typically last 50-75 years. We recommend periodic inspections to check for damage from impacts, corrosion, or debris accumulation.
Yes, we regularly install barriers on slopes exceeding 70 degrees using rope access and helicopter support. Our crews are specifically trained for high-angle installations in remote terrain.
Maintenance includes periodic debris removal from catch areas, inspection of anchors and connections, and replacement of any damaged components. We offer maintenance programs tailored to each installation.

"We engaged Rock Supremacy for a very challenging cliffside project that involved the stabilization and reinforcement of a retaining wall which ultimately required a total of ten drilled horizontal rock anchors, multiple vertical stabilization pilings and encapsulation with concrete structural reinforcement. Even though my residential project, as large as it was to me, was of a much smaller scale than the company often deals with, it approached the task with all of the consideration and professionalism I could hope for. Notably, they were not hesitant to take on a challenging terrain even with its limited access. From the outset, Corey Muir was very engaged in the project and with finding workable solutions. He was eager to explore alternative options for accomplishing the goals and worked diligently with my engineering consultants to tweak the design for a practical, affordable solution. Throughout the planning process, he maintained excellent communications with myself and our structural engineers. Corey was careful to make sure, prior to our final agreement, that all details were fully understood. The company began the project exactly when anticipated. The on-site crew, David, Nate and Jules proved to be the "A" team. They are very skilled and professional. I found them considerate, easy to interact with, and flexible with regard to change possibilities. The team showed careful concern for my property and all possible avoidance of collateral damage while completing a job that involved some very heavy equipment. When the concrete supplier was unduly delayed, they took it in stride and made the best of the situation. The job was actually finished a little ahead of schedule. Definitely a five star rating for this group, I would be happy to further discuss my experience with anyone contemplating the use of Rock Supremacy's services."
