Serving the Southeast & East Coast

Rock Supremacy opened its East Coast division in Blountville, Tennessee in 2024, but our experience in this region goes back much further. Founder Rowan Anderegg began his career in the underground construction world on the East Coast, working with Union Pacific and BNSF Railroads and mastering tunnel rehabilitation, shotcrete, and drilling techniques before founding Rock Supremacy in Oregon in 2011. After over a decade of building the company into one of the most respected geotechnical contractors in the Western U.S., Rowan recognized the same demand for specialized rock stabilization services on the East Coast. The Appalachian region, the Piedmont, the Gulf Coast, and the Caribbean all present geotechnical challenges that require the kind of specialized crews, custom equipment, and vertical-access capabilities that most general contractors simply don't have. Our East Coast division operates from our Blountville facility, strategically located in the Tri-Cities region of northeast Tennessee with direct access to I-81 and I-26, putting us within a day's drive of project sites from Virginia to Alabama and everywhere in between.

What We Do in the Southeast & East Coast

Comprehensive geotechnical services tailored to the unique geological and environmental challenges of the Southeast & East Coast.

Rockfall Mitigation icon

Rockfall Mitigation

Highway corridors through the Appalachians (I-40, I-26, I-77, I-64) are carved through some of the most rockfall-prone geology in the eastern United States. Our rockfall mitigation systems include rock scaling, rock bolting, draped and pinned mesh, Tecco mesh, rockfall barriers, and attenuator systems.

Slope Stabilization icon

Slope Stabilization

The Southeast presents unique slope stability challenges, from ancient Appalachian rock formations to expansive clay soils in the Piedmont and coastal plain. We provide permanent slope reinforcement using soil nailing, tieback anchors, rock dowels, horizontal drains, and structural shotcrete.

Tunnel Rehabilitation icon

Tunnel Rehabilitation

The eastern U.S. has hundreds of aging railroad tunnels, many built in the 1800s and early 1900s, that require ongoing rehabilitation to remain safe and operational. We perform structural shotcrete, rock bolting, steel set installation, scaling, drainage improvement, and portal stabilization.

Earth Retention Systems icon

Earth Retention Systems

Soldier pile walls, secant pile walls, MSE walls, and H-pile systems for highway widening, bridge abutments, commercial development, and deep excavations. We provide both design-build and plan-spec delivery, self-performing all drilling, steel installation, and concrete work.

Emergency Response icon

Emergency Response

When rockfalls and landslides shut down highways or threaten infrastructure, Rock Supremacy maintains 24/7 emergency mobilization capability from our Blountville facility. Our crews deploy within 48 hours to stabilize the threat, clear debris, and restore access.

Foundation Support & Micropiles icon

Foundation Support & Micropiles

Specialized micropile installation, underpinning, and ground improvement for structures on challenging soil, settling foundations, and infrastructure requiring enhanced load capacity. The Southeast's variable soil conditions create persistent foundation challenges that our crews are equipped to solve.

Regional Geology

Southeast & Appalachian Geology

The geology of the Southeast is among the oldest and most complex on the continent, and it creates geotechnical challenges that differ fundamentally from those in the western United States. Designing stabilization systems that perform here requires an understanding of these specific conditions.

The Appalachian Mountains, stretching from Alabama through Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, and beyond, are composed of heavily folded and faulted sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock that has been weathering for hundreds of millions of years. Unlike the relatively young volcanic rock of the Cascades, Appalachian formations are deeply fractured along ancient fault planes and bedding surfaces. These discontinuities create natural failure paths, especially where highway and railroad construction has cut into slopes at angles that intersect those fracture planes.

Tennessee's geology is particularly varied. The eastern portion of the state sits on the Valley and Ridge province, alternating bands of limestone, dolostone, shale, and sandstone that have been thrust-faulted into a series of parallel ridges. Interstate corridors through this terrain, including I-40 through the Smoky Mountains and I-26 through the Blue Ridge, pass through extensive rock cuts that are susceptible to wedge failures, planar slides, and toppling along these bedding planes. West of the Valley and Ridge, the Cumberland Plateau presents its own challenges: massive sandstone cap rock overlying weaker shale layers, creating undercut slopes that fail catastrophically when the shale erodes.

Across the Piedmont, from the Carolinas through Georgia and Alabama, the geology shifts to deeply weathered metamorphic and igneous rock. Residual soils can extend 50 feet or more below the surface, and the transition from soil to rock is often gradual and unpredictable. Slope failures in Piedmont soils tend to be shallow translational slides triggered by heavy rainfall events, the kind of events that are becoming more frequent and more intense across the Southeast.

The Gulf Coast and Caribbean present yet another set of conditions: weak sedimentary formations, high water tables, hurricane-driven storm surge, and active coastal erosion. Our Caribbean island contracts extend our capabilities into environments where saltwater corrosion, tropical storm loading, and remote logistics all factor into the design and construction approach.

Karst terrain, found extensively across Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, adds another layer of complexity. Limestone dissolution creates underground voids, sinkholes, and unpredictable subsurface conditions that can compromise foundations, retaining structures, and slope stability without warning. Rock Supremacy's drilling capabilities and ground investigation experience allow us to identify and address these conditions before they become failures.

Our advantage in this region isn't just our equipment and crews. It's the geological perspective we bring from having worked across the full spectrum of North American geology, from volcanic basalt in Oregon to flood basalt in Idaho, from permafrost in Alaska to ancient metamorphic rock in the Appalachians. We don't apply one-size-fits-all solutions. We design for the conditions in front of us using proven techniques.

I-70 Glenwood Canyon Stabilization
Glenwood Canyon, CO

I-70 Glenwood Canyon Stabilization

Installed 50,000 square feet of high-tensile mesh and performed extensive scaling after a major weather event in one of the most traveled and most constrained highway corridors in the Rocky Mountains. This project demonstrated our ability to execute complex rockfall mitigation in tight highway environments with active traffic.

Moffat Tunnel Railroad Stabilization
Winter Park, CO

Moffat Tunnel Railroad Stabilization

Over 10,000 linear feet of drilling to secure train tracks entering the historic Moffat Tunnel, a 6.2-mile railroad tunnel beneath the Continental Divide. This project showcases the tunnel rehabilitation expertise we're now bringing to the aging railroad tunnel infrastructure across the eastern United States.

Lava Hot Springs Slope Stabilization
Lava Hot Springs, ID

Lava Hot Springs Slope Stabilization

Multi-phase slope stabilization project protecting the historic hot springs resort and Highway 30 from an active landslide. This project required an engineered solution that balanced public safety, infrastructure protection, and preservation of a historic recreational facility.
