Skagway Port Rockfall Protection
Comprehensive rockfall mitigation protecting Alaska's busiest cruise port from an 800-foot active slope, completed in a single winter season before the 2023 tourism season.
Project Stats
The Problem
The 2022 tourism season in Skagway was disrupted by several major rockfall events above the Port of Skagway. The active 800-foot tall slope posed an ongoing threat to cruise ship operations and the local economy. The entire design and construction effort had to be compressed into a single winter season to be ready for the first cruise ship of 2023.
Our Approach
Working with Shannon & Wilson's design team (including HDR and Lounsbury & Associates), the Municipality of Skagway, and White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, Rock Supremacy installed draped mesh systems, two new attenuator barriers, and on-dock protective barriers. Helicopter operations were essential for accessing the steep terrain in winter conditions.
The Outcome
The project was completed on time for the first cruise ship of the 2023 season. The docks reopened and Skagway's economic engine—cruise ship tourism—resumed at full capacity with comprehensive rockfall protection in place.
