The Problem
Continuous erosion from ocean spray and storm events caused a section of the bluff supporting Highway 1 to become unstable. The site was directly above the ocean, complicating access and environmental compliance.
Our Approach
We deployed a spider excavator and rope access teams to install a grid of 500 epoxy-coated soil nails. The face was then covered with sculpted shotcrete to match the surrounding sandstone aesthetic while providing structural support.
The Outcome
The highway remained open during 90% of the construction. The stabilized bluff has withstood two major winter storm seasons without movement.
